Dermabrasion Procedure for Acne Scar Treatment

Dermabrasions for acne scars

Acne dermabrasion is the technique used to eliminate shallow skin imperfections caused by acne. This procedure will use a resurfacing technique that involves a using a hand-held electronic instrument that is equipped with a rotating wire brush. The plastic surgeon may also make use of a sanding tool that contains diamond particles. Whichever tool is used, the concept is still the same and the emphasis is on removing the top scarred layers of the skin so a smoother scar free skin can replace it.

This procedure normally takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour and the surgeon will start off by numbing the skin either by injecting anesthesia or by spraying your skin with a cooling liquid. You may also opt for a sedative. This means that the procedure in itself will not be painful although when the effect of the anesthesia or numbing spray wear off, the patient may feel some pain.

When the procedure is completed, the face is covered in an ointment and the patient is free to go home. For the first few days, the skin will feel scraped, sore and might bleed but and within a couple of days a scab will form on the treated area.

Within a week the scab formed on the face will start to fall to reveal dark pink skin. After 6 weeks this pinkness will fade completely. During these first 6 weeks it is important to avoid shaving the affected area, and to use appropriate skin care products. Your doctor will guide you about the products that you will need.

Advantages:

  • In general dermabrasion works best on people with very light skin tones who have not taken Accutane/ Isotretinoin in the 18 months prior to the procedure.
  • Dermabrasion technique gives good results on shallow scars.

    Drawbacks
  • Acne dermabrasion is a procedure that is used for acne scars and does nothing to active acne. In fact, many surgeons will refuse to perform dermabrasion on people with acne since this will most likely cause a worse infection.
  • The procedure is on the expensive side and on average it is likely to cost around $1500.
  • Dermabrasion may cause discomfort.
